About me

Hi, I'm Raj Vardhan Tomar, a B. Tech graduate from Cluster Innovation Centre, University of Delhi, India, majored in Information Technology and Mathematical Innovation. My work primarily focuses on Artificial Intelligence, software development, and software management. Currently, I'm collaborating with the NLP Research Group under the supervision of Prof. Preslav Nakov and Dr. Yuxia Wang at MBZUAI, where we're working on a project focusing on the safety and security of Large Reasoning Models and the work has been submitted to ARR July 2025. We also worked on detecting machine-generated content. Our work has been accepted at EMNLP 2024.

My journey has taken me through both corporate and research settings. I started with an internship at an Ed-Tech startup, Beyond Exams, then transitioned to bioinformatics research, which led to a publication in the Epilepsy Research journal by Elsevier. Afterward, I worked with the Canada-based startup Soluperts before returning to research at the Design Innovation Centre. Two of my recent research projects have been transformed into products, which brings me immense satisfaction—knowing that people can use and experience our work firsthand.

Resume

Education

  1. Cluster Innovation Centre, University of Delhi

    November 2021 — July 2025

Bachelor of Technology (Information Technology and Mathematical Innovations)
    GPA: 9.302/10.00
Key Courses: AI, Machine Learning, Software Engineering, Data Structures and Algorithms, Probability & Statistics, Object Oriented Programming, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Partial Differential Equations, and Complex Analysis

Research Experience

  1. Research Intern, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence

Supervisor: Prof. Preslav Nakov (May 2024 — Present)

    • Currently working on a project focusing on the safety and security of Large Reasoning Models. We analysed the impact of finetuning a LRM on its safety, reasoning capabilities (Maths and Coding), and general response capabilities. We finetuned 3 LRMs and evaluated them on 11 different benchmarks. We also curated a new and better dataset that improves safety without compromising the general reasoning capabilities of the models.
    • Worked on a human vs. AI comparison in multilingual machine-generated text detection, to analyze semantic distinctions and improve detection methodologies. We manually identified Human vs. AI text and achieved detection accuracy of 87.6\%. We further analysed that the gap can be filled using efficient prompting.
    • Successfully developed a fine-grained detection system to classify content that is ”machine-generated” vs. ”human-written” vs. ”machine-generated then humanized” vs. ”human-written then machine-polished.”
    • Created a large, multilingual, multi-generator, and multi-domain dataset, leveraging transformer models (RoBERTa, DeBERTa, DistilBERT) and a Domain Adversarial Neural Network structure for improved model performance.
    • Built and deployed a user-facing demo (with 96.7% accuracy) using Gradio and Hugging Face for real-time model testing and research translation, with findings presented at EMNLP 2024.

  2. Independent Researcher, University of Delhi

Supervisor: Dr. Sachin Kumar (August 2024 — November 2024)

Developed an AI system to automate the assessment process and provide personalized feedback in real time. The system uses large language models and natural language processing to evaluate student performance across various assessment formats, including objective and subjective questions, as well as project submissions. Submitted as a book chapter in ”Sustainability & Technology in Higher Education,” published by Springer

  3. Independent Researcher, University of Delhi

Supervisor: Prof. Shobha Bagai (September 2023 — November 2023)

Designed a novel Devanagari font using mathematical equations in Python (Matplotlib), applying complex mappings and transformations to give it a hand-written appearance. The results are submitted for publication.

  4. Independent Researcher, University of Delhi

    Supervisor: Prof. B. Biswal (Februrary 2023 — May 2023)

Studied patients’ response to Anti-Epileptic Drugs on a recently collected real-time dataset from North India. Used multiple Machine Learning (RF, XGB, & KNN) and Deep Learning (Neural Networks) algorithms to predict the seizure type and the epilepsy type of patients. The work has been published in the Epilepsy Research Journal.

Other Experiences

  1. Research and Development Intern, Soluperts

    October 2024 - April 2024

Made the back-end of a LLM-based Inventory analysis application using Python. The application also draws inferences from the analysis. Also made a GPT based subjective answer script evaluator using Python and OpenAI. The frontend was made using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Django.

  2. AI Intern, Beyond Exams

    May 2024 - September 2024

Made a LLM-based data analysis application using Python, Flask, AWS, and MySQL. A user can store their database and ask questions in plain English language. Also developed a web application that categorizes YouTube videos to educational and non-educational using Natural Language Processing (NLP), Python, Flask, MySQL and Django.
